I was inspired to write ABC Turkish to distill and simplify my six years of learning Turkish and help others follow a smoother path. As a language school owner, language teacher of more than 25 years (Chinese, English and Spanish), and textbook author (“Chit-Chat Chinese“), I was determined to find a more clear and concise way for people to learn and teach Turkish.
When asked by Turkish speakers if it is a hard language to learn, I always say “Ne kolay ne de zor” (It’s not easy, but it is also not hard.) But there should be an asterisk attached to the “not hard” part. That is, it is not difficult with the right approach.
When I started learning Turkish, I was awash in the disparate and unconnected materials out there. It felt like I was either wading my way through a hodgepodge of information or slogging through a dense catalog of grammar. There was no clear, logical path to put one linguistic step in front of the other. After finally connecting the dots myself, I now aim to share a logical and full approach to help you learn on your own or with a teacher.
In this series, I focus on real-life spoken Turkish, with bite-sized grammar presented in a systematic way (from easiest to more complex). You will not be overwhelmed or confused Each unit guides you in understanding the words you will need, then the grammar, and finally a dialogue or activity to help you practice speaking. You can listen to all of your vocabulary and dialogues online for free. You can also access free online flashcards for all vocabulary for all 12 units.
Finally, I want you to have fun learning and feel connected to Turkish culture. As the units move along, I start to introduce you to fun videos and music you can incorporate into your learning.
Hadi! Let’s get started!
